Wood Stove Hearth
If you are in the market for a new wood stove or pellet stove, don’t put that expensive stove on a cheap corner “pad”. The wood stove hearth is one of my favorite areas of the house to customize since the whole home centers around it. The holidays will be spend sitting in front of it and many a cold winter night reading a book by it.
You’ll appreciate that you did it right for many years to come!
Project Description:
This project was a lot of fun and it turned out great! The original wood stove hearth was from 1974 and the old hearth and wall covering was just concrete that had been painted a dark blue and black (it was awful). That was all removed and a brand new hearth was built with a custom tile job and manufactured stone was installed on the walls.

Project Details:
- Hearth Base: 2″ x 6″ Framed Base with 3/4″ plywood. After it was framed, I installed 1/2″ Durock Cement Board over the plywood for the code-required fireproofing. I also installed 1/2″ Durock on the walls for heat and spark protection there as well.
- Hearth Finish: 18″ x 18″ Porcelain Floor Tiles with a 3-1/2″ Mosaic Strip inlaid for added detail.
- Wall Covering: Manufactured Stone Block from Fairbanks Block and Building Materials.
- Wood Finishes: The mantel and wall frame was build with 2″ x 6″ Douglas Fir (mantel) and 4″ x 4″ Douglas Fir (side frames). They were finished with multiple coats of wood sealer. The front of the hearth base was trimmed out with a 1″ x 8″ Hem Fir Board.
