Birch Mantel and Hearth
Do you enjoy the beauty of a natural Birch Mantel (with live edge) as much as I do? If so, you will enjoy taking a look at this project. Nothing says “Alaska” like a piece of live edge White Birch and so that is what we used for this mantel. See the project details and photos below and hopefully it will at least give you a few ideas of your own!
Project Description:
This was a fun project to build. We installed Galvanized corrrugated metal panels on the walls for a more industrial aesthetic and used j-channel trim around the perimeter. The mantel was cut from a piece of live edge White Birch stock and then coated with multiple coats of clear wood sealer. The mantel was supported by installed 1/2″ threated pipe into 1/2″ floor flanges and then anchoring those to the wall studs. This created a very clean “corbel” as the mantel supports.
Project Details:
- Wall Covering: 7/8″ Galvanized Corrugated Metal – I get this from All Steel (click for link), if you are interested. They are great over there.
- Mantel Supports: 1/2″ Steel threaded pipe with 1/2″ threaded floor flanges anchored into the wall studs. These will not hold a tremendous amount of weight but they easily hold a mantel.
- Mantel: White Birch (Live Edge) with the bark on. You could remove the bark but I opted to leave it on for this project.
- Finish: I used multiple coats (like 5) of a high-quality oil-based wood finish. This step is crucial to a long-lasting product that won’t wear off easily over time.
