With winter ending, this is a very common question on people’s minds. With summer around the corner, you’re probably already thinking about all the projects that you would like to get done this summer. Maybe you are thinking about adding insulation to you walls and attic due to high heating bills last winter. Or maybe you’d like to upgrade that old heating system for a newer, more energy-efficient one. Are your current windows drafty and needing replaced? Well, if you’re considering any of these projects, then this article may be for you.

How would you like to be reimbursed for making your home more energy-efficient, while putting more money in your pocket every year? If so, you need to look into the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Home Energy Rebate Program. This program will reimburse you, up to $10,000, for eligible upgrades that make your home more energy-efficient. Sounds pretty good, right? So now that you know “How to Save Energy and Get Paid for it”, it’s time to go over a few of the details.

Program Details

  • There are no income requirements for this program.
  • Only one rebate per dwelling will be given.
  • Owners are required to pay the costs upfront, and are then reimbursed for making qualifying improvements.
  • You are required to get a before “As-is” and after “Post-Improvement” rating to be eligible to receive a rebate.

Pros

  1. You maintain control over your product selection and how you would like your renovations to be completed.
  2. You can select a qualified contractor to complete the renovations for you, and that cost is also reimbursable.
  3. You have 18 months, after the “As-is” rating, to complete your renovations and get your “Post-Improvement” rating.
  4. Many projects such as: Insulation, Doors and Windows, Siding (with an insulation upgrade), Heating Systems and more can be eligible for the rebate, while adding value to your home.

Cons

  1. You must have the money upfront to do the renovations. If not, you may look into the Weatherization Program as a better option for you.
